One of the best ways to help kids to learn to play hockey and pick up some of the games’ essential skills including shooting, passing and goalkeeping is through the repetition of these powerful field hockey drills for kids. These drills are designed to be fun and will put kids on the path to becoming a fantastic hockey player!
The Running Drill: The very first skill that kids will need to pick up when learning to play hockey is running. It sounds simple and obvious but the game of hockey involves a lot of running around so it’s important to regularly practice doing this and this drill is a great way to do just that. Instead of simply running laps around an oval which kids will often find dry and boring this drill is designed to be fun and game like
Start by having the kids line up along one end of the hockey field and then tell them to run to the half field line and then back again. Next they must run back to the half field line and then back again and then all the way to the other end. After this they must run to the half field line then back to their original position then all the way to the other side of the field and then back to the half field line.
Finally the kids must run from the half field mark to the end of the field and then all the back to the other end of the field and then all the way back to the other side again and then back to the half field line again where they complete the drill.
Be sure to let the kids know that whoever makes it back in first place wins the drill as this will motivate them and encourage them to get competitive!
The Dribbling Drill: This drill is designed especially to teach kids how to dribble effectively which is another crucial skill that all hockey players must learn if they want to become good players. This drill is performed the same way as the running drill except that every kid should have a ball and hockey still too dribbling the whole way throughout the drill.
The Passing Drill: Here’s a useful field hockey drill for kids that will teach them the skill of passing to one another. Start by having the kids all line up at one end of the field each holding a stick in their hand. Then give a ball to the player at the very end of the line on the left hand side.
The drill begins when the coach yells out go and the player with the ball must pass to the player to the player to their right whilst all of the players are running forward. That player then passes to the player to their right and so on. When the last player receives the ball have them pass it back down the line in reverse.
To get used to the drill the kids can start out by jogging down the field before progressing to running.
The Shooting Drill: This field hockey drill will help kids to learn to accurately shoot goals. Start by lining up the kids at the half field line and give every player their own ball. When the coach yells out go every player starting from the player at the left end of the line must shoot for the goal. Repeat this process until players are accurately shooting goals.
